Residents help “Keep Maricopa County Beautiful”

Throughout October, volunteers for the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Adopt a Highway Program collected thousands of bags of litter during the Department’s “Keep Maricopa County Beautiful Month” campaign. In its fourth year, this annual campaign asked residents, “What can you do to keep Maricopa County beautiful?” Volunteers, sponsors and industry partners answered this question by taking the opportunity to schedule a cleanup during the month.

According to Don’t Trash Arizona roadway debris causes more than 25,000 crashes nationwide each year. MCDOT’s Adopt a Highway program helps reduce County maintenance costs, creates safer roads for commuters and helps keep Maricopa County beautiful.

This year more than a dozen and a half Adopt a Highway groups participated in scheduled cleanups to recognize the message of the Keep Maricopa County Beautiful Month. Combined, the groups removed three and a half tons of debris from County roadways.

MCDOT’s Adopt a Highway Program representatives attended community events and gave a presentation at the Southeast Regional Library District to share information about the importance of keeping our county clean and beautiful.

Adopt a Highway cleanups can be scheduled throughout the year and is a fulfilling way for small to large groups to give back to their community. For more information visit the Adopt a Highway page or check out this related Transportation Tuesday video.
