Tax Rate Will Be Set in August 

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will vote on final approval of its FY 2022 budget during a public hearing on Monday, June 21.  The Board, which also governs the Flood Control, Library, and Stadium districts, adopted a tentative budget of $3.423 billion last month.  The budget makes investments in health and human services while also cutting the property tax rate.

Truth in Taxation Hearing

Before the final budget vote, the public will have the opportunity to comment on the FY 2022 budget which lowers the property tax rate.  The Board does not control property values, but as the economy grows, property values increase and some property owners may pay more in taxes even though the tax rate itself is lower.  

While there will be a decrease in the primary property tax rate, the FY 2022 budget includes proposed levies for the following special districts:

        Secondary property tax increase of $3,708,583 or 4.9%, which would increase secondary property taxes on a $100,000 home from $17.08 to $17.92. (Flood Control District) 

        Secondary property tax increase of $1,046,238 or 4.1%, which would increase secondary property taxes on a $100,000 home from $5.34 to $5.56. (Library District) 

The “Truth in Taxation” hearing is required by law and provides Maricopa County taxpayers the opportunity to voice their opinion about the levies mentioned above.  The hearing will be held on Monday, June 21 in the Board of Supervisors’ Conference Room (10th floor) at 301 W. Jefferson, Phoenix, Arizona 85003, starting at 9:30 a.m. Due to continued COVID-19 precautions, this meeting may be held in webinar format.  A link to the webinar meeting will be provided with the required posting notice.  

In accordance with State statute, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will meet at a future date to vote on the final tax levy proposal.  That meeting will be held on August 16, 2021. 

About Maricopa County Taxes 


Historically, Maricopa County receives 11 cents of every dollar paid in property taxes.  The county’s tax levy in FY 2022 is $160.2 million below the maximum amount allowed by state law, meaning the county collects less in taxes than it could.

 Flood Control District (secondary tax)  

In compliance with section 48-254, Arizona Revised Statutes, Maricopa County Flood Control District is notifying its property taxpayers of Maricopa County Flood Control District's intention to raise its secondary property taxes over last year's level. Maricopa County Flood Control District is proposing an increase in secondary property taxes of $3,708,583 or 4.9%. For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Maricopa County Flood Control District's secondary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $17.92. Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $17.08. This proposed increase is exclusive of increased secondary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter-approved bonded indebtedness. 

Library District (secondary tax)

Maricopa County Library District is proposing an increase in secondary property taxes of $1,046,238 or 4.1%. For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Maricopa County Library District’s secondary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $5.56. Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $5.34. This proposed increase is exclusive of increased secondary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter-approved bonded indebtedness. 

 All interested citizens are invited to attend the public hearing on the tax increase that is scheduled to be held June 21, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors’ Conference Room, 301 W. Jefferson, 10th Floor, Phoenix, Arizona 85003. (These meetings may be held by webinar. Additional information will be available on the Clerk of the Board’s website and on each published agenda.)
