Peoria Avenue Improvement Project: Citrus Road to SR303

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is conducting a study to determine what roadway improvements are needed to address storm water drainage, driveway access, connection to SR303, and future travel along the Peoria Avenue corridor.

MCDOT is considering three alternatives with varying characteristics. Proposed improvements include; two lanes each direction, traffic signals, roundabouts, turn lanes, access management, raised medians, flush medians, curbing, sidewalks, and storm water drainage channels. Please see each alternative below for more details.

Project Area (Citrus Road to SR303)

Alternative 1
The existing north curb and shared use path to remain. This alternative will provide raised median with intermittent access points (median breaks), as well as roundabouts at Peoria/Citrus and Peoria/175th Ave., and a traffic signal at Peoria/Cotton.

Characteristics include:

  • Reduces roadway flooding
  • Reduces traffic backed up at intersections
  • Slower traffic at roundabouts
  • Easier to get in and out of properties - vehicles can make a U-turn at roundabout
  • Requires exception by Maricopa Water District for easement configuration

Alternative 2
The existing north curb and shared use path to be removed and reconstructed. This alternative will provide raised median with intermittent access points (median breaks), as well as a roundabout at Peoria/175th Ave., and traffic signals at Peoria/Citrus and Peoria/Cotton.

Characteristics include:

  • Reduces roadway flooding

  • Easier to get in and out of properties - vehicles can make a U-turn at roundabout
  • Removes and reconstructs curb, sidewalk, landscaping, and lighting on north side of Peoria Ave

Alternative 3
The existing north curb and shared use path to remain. This alternative will have raised medians only at traffic signals at Peoria/Citrus, Peoria/175th Ave., and Peoria/Cotton.

Characteristics include:

  • Reduces roadway flooding
  • Reduces traffic backed up at intersections
  • Medians only at traffic signals – more access points (median breaks) for adjacent properties
  • Possible increased traffic may cause delays entering or exiting properties adjacent to Peoria Ave
  • Requires exception by Maricopa Water District for easement configuration

No Build Alternative

Characteristics include:

  • No additional County Paving at this time
  • Existing historical flooding of roadway will continue
  • Existing pavement and barriers will remain
  • Possible traffic delays at intersections
  • Incompatible with corridor west or east of project limits including future development
  • Possible increased traffic may cause delays entering or exiting properties adjacent to Peoria Ave
